Surfing Spot in Lombok & Sumbawa

 Lombok is also known for its best secret surf point, The Desert Point. Still very isolated but for most Australian surfers they named it as "Desert Point", located in South West cost of Lombok. Desert Point also known as Bangko bangko beach.

A long walled and incredibly hollow left hander that on its day can break up to 300 meters, growing in size from takeoff to end. Best between 3-8 ft.

Surfing in Lombok is much less hassle than in Kuta Beach Bali.

Kuta Beach & South Coast of Lombok (The Gerupuk Beach) also offer good quality of surf. You may need to hire boat from locals to take you to some of the wave's point. If you stay in Kuta Beach Lombok, ask around, many locals surfer will guide you to find the waves.

Kuta Lombok is "surfers' paradise". Waves are excellent and many good surf points, such as Mawi, Mawun and etc include "Point X", along South coast of Lombok. Matahari Hotel or Kuta Indah has the wave information board.

GERUPUK BAY

This huge bay is about 7 km east Kuta. The bay itself is home to five different spots which work on various tide, wind and swell combinations. Basically you can always get a wave at Gerupuk. All waves can only be accessed by boat.

Inside Gerupuk: or Bumbang Bay, is a right-hander over a flat reef. It is suitable for all levels an has fun waves, with a long wall and a forgiving lip. On big days with a Southwest swell it can be a great spot to surf. This break is surfable at any seasons and can handle any wind, even the trade wind, as it is protected by the surrounding hills. Best on an incoming tide and can hold 10ft solid.

Outside Gerupuk: or Gili Golong. A right-hander that is good at mid to high tide, better take your booties at low. Multiple peaks outside offer big drops on takeoff bending into a hollow and fast inside section. Can hold 8-10ft but is best at 4-6ft, from October to April.

Don-Don: The furthest break inside the bay and as a result needs a bigger swell to break. Don Don is a perfect A-frame peak walling and bending both left and right. For all level of surfers. Can be good in any season as long as the winds are light. Works on any tide, with out going tide the best time.

Kid's Point: or Pelawangan, is another right-hander, only breaks on the biggest days, but when it works, its barrel city. Best on an incoming tide.

ARE GULING

A right hand reef break located on the west side of Kuta. Access by boat and land is possible. This break is one of the best right hander on the South Coast. Mid to low tides can see the inside section doubling up and barreling. A left hander on the other side of the bay is surfable, though only when its small. Need a north-west wind, most common from October to April. Are Guling can hold 8-10ft when perfect, but is best at 4-6ft.

SEGER BEACH

Located just 2 km from Kuta. Seger is a right reef break, with the occasional left off the peak. A good place when the swell drops. On mid tides and offshore winds this can be a great spot, with short tubes and bowly walls ready for any move you can think of. Need a light wind or north west wind, around Oct-April...

MAWI

Located 20 minutes west of Kuta. On small days this reef break offers a nice peak with short hollow rights and lefts. At 6ft plus, Mawi transforms into a heaving left barrel, with elevator drops and heavy hold downs. At 8-10ft it’s not a spot for the faint hearted. Best on mid tides and a south east trade wind, from May to September. Mawi can hold any size you're prepared to surf, just bring your balls!

EKAS BAY

Located to the east of Kuta and takes about 30 minutes by car to Awang and then another 20 mins by boat across the bay. Ekas is home to two spots.

Outside Ekas: is a left hander that starts working over 5ft and holds up to 10ft. The wave offers huge drops, acres of open face to carve and a ton of power to spare. Best on mid to high tides and a south east wind.

Inside Ekas: Located further inside the bay from Outside Ekas. A fun, walling peak, that can handle real size. Needs a big swell and south east winds, but on it day can offer very long rides and barrels on the inside of the right. Low tides for the right, higher tides for the left and holds 12ft plus.

BANGKO BANGKO OR DESERT POINT

Located on the South West Coast of Lombok, 3 hours drive from Kuta. On its day Desert Point is regarded as one of the best waves on the planet. Barrels of 20 seconds have been filmed there and 10 second tubes are common. Full or new moon low tides, a south east wind and a big swell are needed, most consistent from May to October. It can go weeks without waves, but just one Desert Point bomb will make the wait worth it. Experienced surfer only. Bring your booties an a good tube riding board.

Lakey Beach

One of the surf paradise and become the one of the best surf spot in Indonesia is Lakey Beach, located in Huu District, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. Lakey Beach is one of the beautiful beaches in Indonesia where the Lakey’s wave peak that so famous to foreign countries. Natural attractions are located in the northern area of Central Lombok , West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia . Precisely in the village Senaru, Bayan subdistrict. The village is located approximately 60 km from the capital Mataram. This tourist location is still in the area of Mount Rinjani , which is the third highest mountain in Indonesia.

Location waterfalls are located in the Rinjani region was named Sendang Gila (read gile), because according to the story, local residents accidentally discovered this waterfall when the fuck crazy lion hunt in a village and then ran into the woods. Tourist sites more frequently visited by domestic tourists has a height of approximately 31 meters. This waterfall comes from the top of the cliff and fell into the river beneath. A pleasant alternative return route winds along the edge of the steep valley, following the irrigation canal. For the more adventurous, the “second waterfall” Tiu Kelep, is another hour’s walk upriver from Sendang Gila. The scramble over rocks through the tropical forest is rewarded by the beauty of the waterfall and a swim in its deep pool. It is said locally that every time you swim behind the main waterfall of Tiu Kelep you become a year younger! With access from the main road, the “third waterfall” Betara Lenjang is a true rainforest adventure strictly for rock climbers with local guide and equipment

To go to the location of this waterfall takes about two to three hours by four-wheeled vehicles from the city center or airport Selaparang, Mataram. There is no public transportation that led directly to the location. Therefore, tourists are usually rented vehicle at the car rental which are found in the city center (Mataram  or Cakranegara). To reach the waterfall, visitors must walk down 315 steps through a valley which takes about 15 minutes.

Race is On to Achieve 1 Million Visits

Tourism Chiefs Unite in Vision and Effort

TOURISM and other leaders from throughout West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) met in March to consolidate their efforts and review progress towards bringing one million visitors to the province this year.

NTB’s Culture and Tourism department (Disbudpar) is the lead agency responsible for achieving the one million target of the Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012 flagship campaign.

Figures for 2011 released in February showed an 18.2 percent increase in arrivals – to 886,880 – over numbers for 2010. A similar increase this year would put NTB tourist numbers well over the million-mark.

Disbudpar head Gita Aryadi opened the coordinating meeting which was attended by Culture and Tourism leaders from the province’s eight districts and two cities; and provincial leaders representing Transport and Communications; Regional Planning; and Investment.

Airports operator PT Angkasa Pura also attended along with cultural specialists, tourism operators and media.

The meeting aimed to integrate 2012 tourism promotion and development programs across the province and with national efforts, and to evaluate the success of programs implemented in 2011, said Gita.

The meeting would ensure that all participants directly involved in the development of NTB tourism and culture shared a common vision that would support the Visit Lombok Sumbawa campaign, he said.

“By working together in this way we are giving ourselves the best possible opportunity of achieving our target of one million tourists.”

Throughout 2012, the NTB administration is building and improving a wide range of infrastructure and support facilities, especially at tourism destinations, to enhance the visitor experience.

As well, there is a full calendar of tourism promotion activities and events both within Indonesia and internationally.

NTB will participate in national exhibitions including the Majapahit Travel Fair (MTF) in Surabaya from 10 to 13 May; Surabaya Great Expo 16-10 May; Indonesian Tourism and Culture Expo (Gebyar Wisata & Budaya Nusantara) in Jakarta 31 May-3 June; and a direct promotion in Surabaya yet to be scheduled.

NTB will be well represented at major events in Mataram including the Lombok Sumbawa Expo 14-19 May; the NTB Expo in June; Indonesian Tourism and Creative Products Expo (Parekraf) 27-30 September; the NTB TITex trade, investment and tourism expo 7-11 November; and the Lombok Inafact tabletop promotion 1-4 November.

Lombok and Sumbawa will take their message to the Gelar Wisata & Budaya Indonesia tourism and culture event in Batam 9-12 November; the Kemilau Nusantara national promotion in Bogor in October; a direct promotion in Bali; and to the Indonesia Tourism and Travel Mart in Jakarta in November.

NTB also received exposure through the 2012 Lombok Audax international cycling event at the end of March.

Internationally, the province will be promoted at the Enchanting Indonesia event in Singapore in May; at the Arabian Travel Mart in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia; at the MATTA tour and travel fair in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and at a major global travel fair in London, UK.

In the first half of 2012, NTB promotional campaigns were scheduled in travel magazines and on Megatron TV, and billboards were erected to promote the Visit Lombok Sumbawa program.

Brochures and leaflets were produced in Indonesian, English, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. An events calendar was published and souvenirs were produced.

The tourism program will be promoted at the 2012 Lombok Sumbawa Pearl Festival in June and awards will be presented to major supporters of the campaign at an Appreciation Night in December.

NTB Rates High in Tourism Survey

A SURVEY by Indonesia’s leading meeting industry magazine has rated Lombok as the fifth most popular Indonesian destination for international tourists and third most popular destination for MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) events.

The official survey by Venue Magazine found that international tourists favoured Lombok after neighbouring islands Bali and Komodo, then Yogyakarta and the special capital city region of Jakarta, both on Java.

The finding is a boost to efforts by the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial administration and tourism industry to improve facilities, services and accessibility for visitors.

“The rating puts Lombok ahead of other popular areas such as Bandung in West Java, East Java, Manado and Bunaken in North Sulawesi, Central Java and Raja Ampat in Papua,” said NTB Culture and Tourism head Gita Aryadi.

“If the survey had been conducted into 2012 when a variety of tourism improvements were well underway, then we believe the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa could have taken second or third place,” said Gita.

Lombok’s position as third most popular Indonesian destination for meetings and exhibitions endorses government and industry strategies to improve the island’s share of the lucrative MICE market.

“Only the city of Jakarta and Bali are more popular than NTB for MICE events,” said Gita. “We are ahead of the special region of Yogyakarta, Solo, Batam, Surabaya, Central Java, Makassar, Manado, Banten then Bandung and others.”

The Venue Magazine survey results support the findings of earlier research by Bank Indonesia Mataram and Mataram University’s economics faculty which found that 90.45 percent of surveyed tourists who had visited Lombok or Sumbawa said they would return.

Both results endorse the tourism sector’s conviction that continued exploration and development of NTB’s stunning natural attractions and rich culture will help achieve its vast potential for tourism growth.

“The challenge, of course, is to create and maintain a climate in NTB that is conducive to investment,” said Gita.

“Today, many locations in NTB are being trialled by entrepreneurs who want to invest, especially those engaged in the tourism sector.

“The effort to attract investment has received support from the provincial government and regional and city administrations which are all working to ease the path to investment.”

And the national land agency (BPN) in NTB has moved to identify land that has been abandoned by intending developers and to require investors to start development.

“Thanks to God, over the next two years many new hotels will be built on Lombok,” said Gita. Culture and Tourism department data to the end of March 2012 showed that Lombok could expect 1500 new hotel rooms, he said.

Gita said NTB people could be optimistic that if they kept their province clean and helped build its tourism industry, they would prosper.

Venue Magazine has a monthly circulation of 20,000 and is read by meeting planners and exhibition organisers in Indonesia.
